The Information Technology Department (DGI, Spanish abbreviation) participated in the Mexican Society for Computing in Education 2010 (SOMECE, Spanish abbreviation) through Ing. Joaquin Huante Hernandez, Academic Services Deputy Director.
Ing. Huante Hernandez’s presentation: ‘Experiencias en la Implementacion de los Sistemas Institucionales de la UANL’ -Experiences in the Implementation of UANL Institutional Systems, in English- closed the series of lectures within the 26th International Symposium of Computing in Education of the Mexican Society for Computing in Education.
This event was carried out in the ‘Unidad de Seminarios’ of the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL) Mederos Campus, from October 23rd to 27th, 2010. The DGI was one of the organizers.
Also Ana Maria Prieto Hernandez, from the Universidad Pedagogica Nacional and Professor Pablo Cesar Hernandez from the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana participated in the panel moderated by Professor Victoria Casariego Vazquez, with ‘Retos y Avances de la Especializacion en Competencias Docentes para Profesores de Educacion Media Superior’ -Challenges and Advances of the Specialization in Teaching Competences for High School Professors, in English- and ’35 Años de Tradicion Presencial e Inicio de la Educacion Virtual en la UAM-Iztapalapa’ -35 Years of On-site Tradition and the Beginning of Virtual Education at the UAM-Iztapalapa, in English- respectively.
Specialists on educational information technology, professors, pedagogues, education authorities, leaders and people in charge of education projects, education scientists, decision takers in education, parents, students, and all people interested in the use and application of new information and communication technologies in education, were invited to interact, share, and give knowledge in SOMECE 2010.
Ing. Joaquin Huante explained the importance of the services provided by the DGI.
“I want to share with you our experience in the UANL, in the implementation of the Systems that the Information Technology Department gives to the Institution, specially to the Academic and Administrative areas, looking at the relation among the elements that we consider as essential in order to provide these services, I am talking about technology, processes and individuals.”
“During the last five years, our Leading Academic Institution has been promoting the Information and Communication Technologies because it helps it in the achievement of its objectives, and one of its main aims is to be an institution with international education quality.”
“To achieve this, the Information Technology Department has contributed creating IT -Information Technology- services. One of them is the Integrated System for the Academic Services Administration (SIASE, Spanish acronym) (…) the tool that helps students, professors and the administration staff in their different processes for education. Nowadays, it has more than 2,000 administrative users, besides providing service to more than 135 thousand students and more than 11 thousand professors (…) we have a an average of 45,000 accesses per month for the client-server and 890,000 accesses via Internet. This system has been working since 2005.”
“NEXUS is our LMS -Learning Management System,- it is the Teaching and Learning platform and provides service to more than 36 thousand users, it is implemented in 65 institutional buildings and has 42 modules, it has the SCROM -Sharable Content Object Reference Model- standard; courses established in the model of teaching based on competences can be created.”
“CODICE, it is the Integrated System for Libraries Administration. Nowadays, it has more than 31 thousand users and it is implemented in 56 UANL libraries, (…) we have an average of 400 thousand visits per month and it has been working since 2008 in the UANL. It has about 385 thousand bibliographic entries.”
“We also provide the UANL with services such as the Institutional Labor Exchange (called Unibolsa,) an Information System for Quality Management (which supports ISO 9001-2008,) Academic and Administrative E-mail, among others.”
“We have set in motion all these services taking into account different factors: showing their effectiveness: implementing pilot tests so the user can confirm our services’ operation; and involving the user, because with his feedback we can know their necessities.”
“We also make regular surveys with the purpose of knowing the reach of the services we provide; we give support and advisory based on the practices of ITIL -Information Technology Infrastructure Library- and ISO 9001-2008; we adapt ourselves to changes since they are common in technology; we also give security and control in information since the user must be sure that his information is protected.”
TECHNOLOGY, PROCESSES AND INDIVIDUALS
“These three elements are essential to support the IT -Information technology- services, they are pillars and we are trying to strengthen them. As we will be monitoring and attending them, we could be sure that IT services will have a great availability and they will fulfill our user’s necessities.”
“The acquired technology, with qualified personnel, but without processes, would not be completely useful. A procedure for the right use of technology, without the right personnel, will be only good intentions. To have personnel with the knowledge and procedures to execute their activities, without technology, will require a greater effort.”
“To strengthen the pillar of Technology, we must evaluate and apply the one that is according to the institution’s and the user’s necessities. We must consider costs, usability, reach, lifetime and use.”
“In the pillar of Processes, we are establishing COBIT -Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology,- ITIL, and CMMI -Capability Maturity Model Integration,- we are already certified in ISO 9001-2008.”
“We make these efforts to be sure that what we are doing is based on the best international IT practices.”
“In the pillar of Human Resource, the DGI knows that it is necessary to have committed and qualified people, with the necessary knowledge to work correctly and maintain the stability among these three important columns, and in this way, to be sure that our services are created and managed in the best possible way,” concluded Ing. Joaquin Huante Hernandez.
